Note:
Chateau Brane-Cantenac is a Deuxièmes Cru of Médoc and is
currently available at BCLS for $299. The 2003, however, is not a stellar vintage so I
was able to buy it 12 years ago for a lower than normal price. Since I have no idea what it's now worth,
I have set the VP rate at my cost. It may not be the best vintage ever produced by this winery, but
it's still an excellent wine and should be a fair base for comparing a
French Bordeaux to the highly acclaimed Red Icon.
Tasting Results:
The Church and State Chardonnay was preferred over the Jean-Louis Chavy by all but two of us, one
who thought them equal and one who preferred the French. Winner: BC.
The Pinot Noir winner was clearly the Paul Garaudet for France. Four in favour, one
equal, two chose the Meyer Family wine, one abstention.
France wins for the Bordeaux as well. Two in favour of the Brane-Cantenac, two equal,
one chose the Painted Rock, three abstentions.
Although most of us did have a preference, none of these wines were unanimous and, judging from the
conversations, all were thought to be good wines. Personally, I rated them as I always do for my records and
all were one point apart from their competitor.
Tasting Notes:
Starter
2018 Painted Rock
Rosé
The aromas of strawberry and red
currant just bound from the glass, leading to bold and herbaceous flavours of strawberry, cranberry, cherry and red
currant.
2016
Jean-Louis Chavy Bourgogne Blanc
Entry level wine from one of the top
producers in Puligny-Montrachet, Burgundy. Stone fruits, nice acidity, minerality and length.
2015 Church & State Signature
Series
From the New World International
2017 Competition in San Francisco: 95 points, Best New World Chardonnay, Best Canadian White Wine, Best in
Class
This wine shows bright, vibrant
aromas and flavours of lemon zest, golden delicious apple, nashi pear and vanilla bean custard. These intense
flavours are framed in elegant, balanced acidity, with a long, lingering finish.
Pinot Noir
2010 Paul Garaudet
Pommard
Deep in color, aromatic and full of
robust, rich flavors, this Pommard can be considered the symbol for red Burgundy. Pommard's intriguing Pinot Noir
complexity strikes a magical balance between muscularity, full-bodied richness and pure grace.
2015 Meyer Family McLean Creek Rd
Vineyard
The nose boasts notes of
cranberry, sour cherry and cassis. The palate is blackberry, dark chocolate, and forest floor with a gorgeous
tannin structure to stand up to a more robust food pairing.
Bordeaux Blends
2003 Chateau
Brane-Cantenac
Chateau Brane Cantenac is an
elegantly, styled Margaux, that is on the lighter, fresher, cleaner, brighter, and perhaps, slightly stern, or
classic side of the style range, especially in its youth.
2014 Painted Rock Red
Icon
This wine invites you in with rich
aromas of blackberry, dark plums, cassis and sweet spices. The palate, with its velvety tannins and high acid,
offers bold and juicy black fruit layered with pepper, baking spices, vanilla and chocolate.
